History of Travelodge

Travelodge arrived in the UK in the 1980s when the US Travelodge brand was bought by hotelier and caterer Charles Forte. He introduced them to many of his Little Chef eateries. At this time they were known as Little Lodge before being re-branded as Travelodge.

Originally part of the Forte Group, Travelodge UK is now a company in its own right, with over 500 establishments making it the second biggest operator in the budget hotel sector behind Premier Inn and the third largest hotel chain in the UK.

The very first Travelodge was located off the A38 near Lichfield. Many Travelodges are situated close to major roads, although new branches are increasingly opening in city centres.

In 2006 Dubai investment fund DIC bought it for £675 million but its fortunes were hit by the advent of the UK recession. In 2012, on the verge of going bust, it underwent a major financial restructure with ownership passing to the New York based hedge funds Goldentree Asset Management and Avenue Capital Group as well as Goldman Sachs.

More than £75 million was pumped into the business. In 2013 the company announced a £223 million investment programme focused on room makeovers and expansion. In April 2015 it was announced that profits had surged by more than 60% just three years after its near collapse to £66.2 million. It was thought at this time that a sell-off was likely.

Travelodge also announced that it had identified a possible 250 new sites with 150 of them expected to be ready over the next eight years. Don't forget when booking to look for great discounts and offers on your stay.

Wake up to an all you can eat breakfast and choose from traditional English breakfast options such as sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs and tomatoes, or continental. The cost is £7.65 per adult with children eating free. Or, if you've no time for a sit-down breakfast, or there's no bar/caf√© available, you can opt for a Breakfast Box with two tasty selections.

More than 140 Travelodges have bars/caf√©s offering tasty, affordable food and drink. Options include fish and chips, pie and mash, burgers, pizzas, hot dogs and sandwiches. Adults can choose from two deals; either a main course and a drink for £9.95 or two courses and a drink for £12.75. Check with individual Travelodges for other offers. And look out for discount vouchers. Children are catered for with two courses for £4.95. There is also a range of snacks available 24 hours a day, either from reception or vending machines.

Catering For Business Clients

Travelodge has in recent years sharpened its focus at attracting more business clients by increasing its offer. It now has city centre locations across the UK, Ireland and Spain. There is a dedicated business website with a 5% discount on flexible bookings and, it says, the best business rates in the marketplace. Group bookings are available. There is also a Travelodge Business Account Card which provides six weeks interest free credit.

Terms & Conditions

You can cancel a booking and Travelodge will not charge you for the first night on flexible deals only and you may also shorten your stay after the first night if you have booked for more than one night and you will be refunded, providing notification is received before midday. However, no refunds will be provided on a saver or sale room booking or extras.

Travelodge takes the security of its customers very seriously. All sensitive information including personal and credit card details is kept confidential through a 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer or SSL giving you peace of mind. Check for the padlock symbol.

Unfortunately, a majority of feedback left on Travelodge at TrustPilot is negative with an overall rating of 'poor' based on 95 comments with dissatisfaction at customer service frequently cited. Other comments though are very complimentary.
