History of River Island

River Island is a fashion chain based in London. The chain was originally set up by Bernard Lewis in London in 1948 and the company is actually still owned by the Lewis family to this day. Although it is one of the biggest names in UK fashion, River Island started off with Bernard Lewis selling fruit and vegetables in London's East End. He then moved on to selling knitting wool, and by 1965 he had joined his brothers and expanded to over 70 outlets. The company had a few different names, before settling in 1988 on River Island. Since 1993, the company has expanded outside the UK, in such places as Russia, Ireland, Poland and some countries in the Middle East. There are now over 300 River Island stores all over the world. They also have a website which ships their unique fashion brand to over a hundred countries worldwide.

In 2010, River Island introduced a childrenswear section, and in 2011 they introduced a "capsule collection" called Chelsea Girl, which was the brand's original name in 1965.

River Island has a global supply network with sources and manufacturers across the globe - but they also work hard to maintain an ethically responsible supply chain with good manufacturing relationships with all suppliers. They also pride themselves on a long standing commitment to ethical trading, which is becoming more and more popular. In 2013, they signed the Bangladesh Accord, with a commitment to improving working conditions in all countries where River Island operates.

River Island offers two options for delivery within the UK: standard delivery within three to four working days costs £3.95; express delivery costs £5.95 and delivers on the next working day. They also ship to over 100 destinations worldwide, with varying charges depending on speed and distance.

Returns Policy

River Island offers free UK returns, with a full refund if returned within 14 days of receipt. Items can be returned either via post or to any River Island Store. If returning items to a store, the card used for the original payment must be there, along with the authorised signatory on that account. If the original card is not present, a refund will be made via River Island gift card. If returning via post, you can take your package to any local Collect+ provider (many local supermarkets and post offices offer this) for free postage. If your item was paid for via PayPal, a refund can only be processed by post - not in store, however you can exchange items paid for via PayPal in stores.
