History of Wilko

Wilko was founded by James Kemsey Wilkinson in 1930 as Wilkinson Cash Stores, changing its name to Wilkinson Hardware Stores in 1941. Its first store was in Leicester, and within ten years it had built a network of nine high street branches. By the time the founder died in 1997, the company had expanded to more than 150 stores, and this has increased to a total of 376 stores today.

Wilkinson's stores were such a well-established fixture of British high streets that they inevitably acquired an affectionate nickname, Wilko. As far back as the 1970s, the business started officially using this nickname on its own label products. However, from 2012 the company decided to ditch the formality of Wilkinson entirely, and capitalise on its more familiar name by completely rebranding itself as Wilko. This process was completed in 2014.

Wilko sells a broad range of household goods, centred mainly on homewares, small DIY products, stationery, cleaning products and pet supplies, along with a limited range of beauty products, bathroom goods and confectionery. Groceries were introduced in 2007, but only in larger stores. Many Wilko products are own-label products carrying the Wilko logo.

Wilko launched its online sales portal as as Wilko Plus in 2005. Today, Wilko.com sells a wider range of products than you'll find in their high street stores. You can also easily use promotional voucher codes on the site, by inputting your code on the payment details page. Wilko's voucher codes typically offer specific discounts, multi-buy offers or free delivery. Please note that Wilko do not allow voucher codes to be combined with gift vouchers or gift cards.

Opening Times

Wilko's opening times vary across its 376 locations, but they are typically open seven days a week, till 6pm weekdays and 4 or 5pm on Sundays. Wilko.com provides a branch finder which includes opening times for all locations.

Delivery Information

Wilko.com offers free home delivery on all orders over £50 placed before 2pm, including large items. Otherwise the standard delivery charges are £3.50 for small items and £9.95 for large items. For small items ordered by 2pm, there is also a premium next-day delivery option available for £6.95.

Delivery from Wilko.com is available at these standard charges to all of mainland England and Wales, plus southern Scotland. Standard delivery time is within four working days for small items, seven working days for large items and 28 days for items marked as home delivery only.

Deliveries to the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Wight, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Scilly, the Grampians and Northern Ireland are available with additional charges, and will take extra time. Deliveries are not permitted to addresses in the Channel Islands, the Shetland Islands or any other countries.

Alternatively, Wilko offers free store delivery. If you order by 2pm, your items will be delivered to your nearest Wilko store within 48 hours (excluding Sundays and bank holidays). Large items can only be collected after 3pm, and items marked for home delivery only cannot be delivered to stores.

Returns Policy

Wilko operates a cashback promise, guaranteeing that if you are not completely satisfied with your purchase for any reason, you can call them within 28 days and they will offer an exchange or your money back.

For any products purchased online or by telephone, a full refund will be issued within 30 days, and this will include any delivery charges if you return the entire order. Items can be returned to any Wilko store, or collection can be arranged by courier for home delivery items. Prior to shipping, orders can be cancelled by contacting Wilko directly.

Exceptions to this returns policy include sheds or outside equipment that has been treated, DVDs, computer software, perishable goods, made to measure items, and certain items where you have removed the packaging or seals, such as mattresses, sofa beds and personal hygiene products.

In the case of faulty, damaged or incorrect items, Wilko will offer a repair, replacement or full refund. This does not apply to damage caused by the customer, normal wear and tear, or incorrect assembly or use by the customer.

In all cases, whether products are returned by courier or direct to a store, customers are requested to repackage them in a suitable way, preferably using the original packaging material.

Charity

Wilko has a strong stance on social responsibility, and supports a range of national and local charitable causes. These include the Royal British Legion, Comic Relief and BBC Children in Need. Wilko regularly stages charitable fundraising events and activities in its high street stores, and its employees often volunteer their time to local charities.
