History of Coopers of Stortford

Coopers of Stortford takes its name from the town where it set up business - Bishops Stortford, a town on the Hertfordshire and Essex border. It came about when the Coopers took over a long time local business, Maslens, which was situated in a 19th century malt house purchased by an entrepreneur, Mr Handscombe, who sold hardware supplies from a few different premises. In 1944, the historic building was due to be knocked down to make way for a car park, until Mr Handscomb decided to consolidate all his businesses into the old malt house, saving it from the developers, and calling it Maslens.

He took over two more buildings in Bridge Street, which are now all connected, but were once separate. One was a 16th century timber framed property, and the other was the former Post Office, built in the 19th century, where the business premises remains.

In 2004, in a surprise announcement which nobody saw coming, Maslens was taken over by Coopers of Stortford, and the business continued to do a great trade, expanding into mail order and internet trading. They now also own and operate from a large distribution warehouse beside the A120 in Essex.

Coopers categorise their stock into seven different departments:

4) Home For those who want to show their home some love, this section stocks lighting, heating and cooling appliances, dehumidifiers, furniture and storage, clocks and barometers, doorbells and home security features, energy saving devices, real fires and phones.

5) Health Coopers stock a great deal of helpful mobility aids, which are useful for people suffering difficulties with mobility, vision, hearing, or wanting support with gentle exercise. There are also health and beauty products in this category.

6) Leisure Coopers stock all you need for your free time, including everything you need for your family pets. Whatever your hobbies, whether they're motoring, bird watching, walking, travelling, listening to the radio or music, reading or cycling, Coopers have the equipment for it.

Opening Times

Coopers' internet store is always open for purchases, but if you want to visit their historic store in Bishops Stortford, the opening hours are 9am - 5.30pm, with the exception of Wednesdays when they open at 9.30am, and Sunday when they open from 10am until 4pm. There is free car parking available on the site.

Online customer services operate between 10am and 4pm on weekdays only.

Delivery Information

Coopers operate a flat rate delivery tariff for UK customers (not including the Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland), no matter what you order. All deliveries cost £4.99. They endeavour to dispatch orders within seven days of them being placed, and ask customers to allow up to 29 days for delivery.

Returns Policy, Security & Reviews

Any items purchased from Coopers of Stortford can be returned to their distribution centre within 28 days of being delivered for a refund, exchange, or replacement. Postage and packing charges do not get refunded, unless the order is cancelled within seven working days of receipt. Coopers prefer all returns to be sent via the Post Office, with the customer taking a proof of postage from the cashier, and enclosing a note with the reason for return and order reference.

If the item is too big for the Post Office to accept, Coopers ask customers to contact customer services to arrange for help.
